I am terribly sorry for behaving like such a ‘fan girl’ readers, but I am obsessed with Colin Cowie. OBSESSED. Not in like, a stalker-ish kind of way. It’s much closer to hero worship actually. As an event planner, I would spend hours pouring over his amazing books and photo spreads wondering how he did it. What inspired him? I would have daydreams of having tea with him and discussing card stock and linens. And in these daydreams I would inevitably say something incredibly charming like, “For this luau, I would like to design a model volcano as the centerpiece that shoots rose petals out when it erupts instead of lava”. Then we would become best friends and he would ask me to come work for him. Sigh.
The reason for my obsession should be quite clear: If event planning were an Olympic sport, Colin Cowie would be a five time gold medalist. The man achieves perfection EVERY SINGLE TIME. With eight published books (five on weddings, two on entertaining and one on how to just be fabulous), and a mile long roster of celebrity clients, Colin (can I call you Colin?) is the ultimate tastemaker. His approach to event design is consistently fresh and his perspective on style is always unique. Take a look at Colin’s answers to RP Reports favorite five questions!
RP Report: What is your favorite current trend in our industry?
Colin Cowie: Technology is amazing today. Interactive cocktail tables, walkways and dance floors are amazing. Each time you touch the cocktail table, bubbles or any pattern come alive. Or while walking down an aisle or dancing on a dance floor, it can be programmed to show anything from blossoms of flowers to abstract patterns. Also, with LED capability, a single instrument gives you the ability to create any color combination.
RP Report: What trend do you wish would go away?
Colin Cowie: Surf & Turf. There’s nothing more unappealing to me than a lobster tail next to a beautiful cut of aged beef. To me, they’re church and state – keep them separate.
RP Report: What do you think will be the next ‘big thing’ in special events?
Colin Cowie: Events that were more formal will now manifest themselves as better fleshed out cocktail parties with stations of food and wine pairings rather than a formal sit down dinner on a Saturday night.
RP Report: What is your favorite event that you have ever worked on, and why?
Colin Cowie: My favorite event is always the next event.... it’s the one that takes up most of my creative and passionate mind.
RP Report: In the spirit of community, if you had to recommend one vendor or venue who you think does fabulous work, who would that vendor/venue be, and why?
Colin Cowie: My latest favorite vendor is Elite Elixirs. They call themselves Cocktail Architects and craft the most amazing drinks and libations. I set up a specialty bar and have them make cocktails at all my parties. Yusef Austin always has the best looking people behind the bar.... the cocktails are always delicious, well crafted and presented and most importantly - the guests love them and I enjoy a well fuelled party!!!! www.elite-elixirs.com/
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU to Colin Cowie!!!
